This sculptural vase explores the destructive collision between industrial expansion and the natural world, utilizing a rigid, black geometric base that represents the consuming grip of industry. Rising high above this oppressive structure, a deeply textured, organic tree trunk reaches upward as a powerful testament to nature’s desperate, enduring resilience.

Thomas Paik is a ceramic artist based in Canada, currently finished his 4 years studies at Sheridan College. His practice approaches ceramics as a narrative and tactile medium, using material change to explore human experience, states of being, and our relationship with nature. Clay’s sensitivity to touch, time, and transformation allows his work to carry emotion, memory, and story.

With a background in engineering and over two decades of professional experience in ceramic screen printing and production management, Thomas brings a deep material awareness to his work, supporting both intuitive and deliberate making. He has participated in the Medalta Student Residency, where engagement with historical ceramic practices strengthened his interest in authorship and transformation.

Thomas is a board member of the Fusion Clay & Glass Association, serving as a student representative and advocating for shared knowledge and community engagement. Through his work, he seeks to create ceramics that invite dialogue, participation, and reflection.
